Ukraine has issued a warning to Ulaanbaatar for failing to arrest Russian President Vladimir Putin upon his arrival in Mongolia. Despite an ICC warrant for his arrest, Putin was allowed to enter the country without consequence. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has threatened Mongolia with “consequences” for not upholding the arrest warrant and ensuring Putin faces justice at the International Criminal Court.
The warrant was issued last year, accusing Putin of “unlawful deportation” of children from Ukraine. While the ICC lacks mechanisms to enforce its warrants, Ukraine has taken a stance against Putin’s actions. The Ukrainian parliament ratified the ICC statute last month, signaling support for international criminal justice.
Russia and Ukraine are not signatories to the Rome Statute, but the warrant against Putin still stands. Moscow has dismissed the accusations as absurd, stating that their actions were in response to threats posed by Ukrainian artillery and drone strikes.
The failure to arrest Putin in Mongolia has sparked outrage, with Ukraine vowing to seek consequences for Ulaanbaatar’s complicity in letting the Russian president evade justice.
