Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan has expressed concern over the high cost of a bicycle shed installed at Leinster House, which reportedly cost €335,000. He called for the Office of Public Works (OPW) to provide justification for the expense, stating that public funds must be spent wisely.
Despite being initially praised as a climate-friendly initiative, the extravagant cost of the shed has sparked controversy. The breakdown of costs reveals that a significant amount was spent on construction, archaeological services, quantity surveying, and contract administration.
The OPW defended the expense, citing the historical significance of the location and the need for a high-quality structure. They emphasized that the shelter was designed to blend in with the surrounding landscape while providing protection from the elements.
While the OPW stated that a business case was not required for the project, questions remain about the necessity of such a costly endeavor.
Minister Ryan also highlighted the need for more affordable infrastructure projects, particularly in the public transport sector, to accommodate the growing number of commuters.
