The Civil Society of Kenya Stands in Solidarity with the Tumaini Initiative for Peace in South Sudan
The Civil Society of Kenya recently gathered at the Ufungamano Hall in Nairobi to express their support for the Tumaini Initiative for Peace in South Sudan. They commended Gen Salva Kiir Mayardit and South Sudan Opposition leaders for engaging in peaceful negotiations to restore hope, peace, and stability in the war-torn region.
The group also praised President William Samoei Ruto for hosting and facilitating the Tumaini Initiative. They called on Ruto to deepen support for South Sudan’s leaders in reaching a peaceful political settlement for the benefit of their people and the region.
Despite some challenges, including leaders withdrawing their delegations, the Civil Society of Kenya urged all South Sudanese leaders to prioritize the needs of their people and make necessary compromises for sustainable peace.
At least 22 organizations, including Youth in Focus, Ushauri Paralegal, and Kayole Community Justice Center, signed a statement of solidarity with the Tumaini Initiative. The peace talks, which began in Nairobi in May, aim to bring together various opposition groups that were not part of the 2018 peace deal.
The Civil Society of Kenya called on all stakeholders, including mediators from IGAD and the Community of Sant’Egidio in Italy, to ensure the inclusivity and success of the peace process in South Sudan.
