Qassam Brigades Issue Warning Over Captives Held in Gaza
The armed wing of Hamas, the Qassam Brigades, issued a warning stating that captives held in Gaza would be returned to Israel “in coffins” if Israeli military pressure continues. The statement came two days after Israeli forces recovered the bodies of six captives from a Gaza tunnel.
Hamas spokesman Abu Obeida blamed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the deaths, alleging that Netanyahu’s refusal to reach a deal resulted in the captives’ fate. Netanyahu, on the other hand, accused Hamas of executing the captives.
Protests erupted in Israel over the deaths, with demonstrators calling for a ceasefire with Hamas to prevent such tragedies. However, experts believe that Netanyahu’s political motives may hinder any progress towards a resolution.
US President Joe Biden also criticized Netanyahu for not doing enough to secure a deal for the release of the captives. The ongoing conflict underscores the deep divide between Hamas’s desire for a ceasefire and Netanyahu’s focus on defeating the group.
