The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) in Jordan, with funding from Japan, has partnered with the Ministry of Agriculture to launch a project addressing climate change and natural resource challenges in refugee hotspot areas of northern Jordan. This initiative, titled “Emergency response to climate change and natural resource crises in refugee hotspots in Jordan,” will focus on disaster risk reduction, community-based solutions, and forest rehabilitation. Key activities include cash-for-work programmes for forest rehabilitation, capacity building on disaster risk management, and establishing community-based disaster response mechanisms.
The project targets 150 beneficiaries in Zaatari Refugee Camp, Ajloun, and Jerash, including Syrian refugees and host community members. By involving both groups in forest rehabilitation and risk management activities, the aim is to enhance food security and protect livelihoods near the forests. The initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goals such as Zero Hunger and Life on Land, working towards sustainable agriculture and ecosystem preservation.
With the goal of creating lasting impact and promoting sustainable development, this project represents a vital step in addressing urgent needs of refugees and host communities in Jordan.
