Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te boldly challenged China’s claims on Taiwan by pointing out the historical 1858 Treaty of Aigun where China ceded land to Russia. Lai emphasized that if China’s argument is about territorial integrity, then it should also reclaim the territory given to Russia by the last Chinese dynasty in the 19th century.
Despite China considering Taiwan as its own territory and threatening to use force to assert control, Taiwan maintains its stance on self-determination. The Taiwanese government firmly believes that the future of the island should be decided by its people and not by external powers.
President Lai’s remarks, deemed provocative by China, were made in an interview with a Taiwanese television station. By referencing historical events, Lai highlighted the complexities of territorial claims and urged for a more nuanced understanding of the situation between China, Taiwan, and historical treaties.
