In a witty exchange reminiscent of colonial times, an enthusiastic missionary’s confidence in facing African jungles is questioned due to lions not reading the survival guide. Similarly, Uganda’s latest government declaration on reducing pump prices fails to excite the public, highlighting a lack of compliance from oil marketing companies.

Despite repeated efforts by Energy Minister Ruth Nankabirwa, fuel affordability remains a challenge as Uganda grapples with rising prices and complex regional dynamics. The recent collapse of Kiteezi mountain, possibly due to methane accumulation, underscores the interconnected challenges of waste management and energy production.

As Ethiopia leads in sustainable practices like phasing out fossil fuels, African cities are urged to see garbage as an opportunity for innovation, such as generating electricity from waste. Embracing clean energy solutions like electric railways could revolutionize urban transport and reduce petroleum dependency.

By leveraging garbage for power generation, cities like Kampala have the potential to create a sustainable and efficient public transportation system, paving the way for a cleaner and greener future.
