Voters in Azerbaijan participated in snap parliamentary elections, the first since reclaiming control of Nagorno-Karabakh. President Ilham Aliyev’s New Azerbaijan party is expected to maintain dominance in the Milli Mejlis parliament.
Azerbaijan, a country with almost 10 million people, has seen strong leadership from the Aliyev family as the nation prospered from its vast oil and gas reserves. The ruling party holds most seats in the parliament, with the main opposition Musavat party also participating in the election.
The election, originally scheduled for November, was moved up two months due to Azerbaijan hosting the COP29 climate talks in Baku. Last year, Azerbaijani forces reclaimed the Karabakh region from ethnic Armenian forces, leading to a shift in the area’s demographics.
The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe will provide a preliminary assessment of the election shortly. Stay informed with the latest news from Turkey and beyond by subscribing to the Daily Sabah Newsletter.
