Kiev successfully tests first ballistic missile – Zelensky

Ukraine has successfully test-fired its first domestically-produced ballistic missile, as announced by President Vladimir Zelensky. The move comes after repeated pleas to the West for permission to use foreign-made missile systems to target Russian territories. While details of the missile remain undisclosed, Zelensky expressed his desire for the public to recognize and support domestic defense producers.

Despite relying on Western-supplied missile systems like the US-designed HIMARS and ATACMS, Ukraine has faced limitations in using these weapons to strike deep into Russia. Pentagon spokesperson Patrick Ryder confirmed that Ukraine can utilize US security assistance for counterfire but not for expansive operations. This restriction has led to criticism from Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who sees the West’s stance as “blackmail.”

The recent developments underscore the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region, with Ukraine seeking to bolster its defense capabilities amid the conflict with Russia. The implications of Ukraine’s missile testing and its diplomatic relations with Western nations continue to shape the dynamics of the conflict.
