Families of hostages in Gaza call for nationwide strike to secure release
Following the discovery of six bodies in Gaza, families of hostages have called for a nationwide strike to force the government to secure the release of captives still held in the region. The Hostages and Missing Families Forum urged the public to join a massive demonstration and demanded a complete halt of the country to implement a deal for releasing the hostages.
Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid also called for a “general strike,” blaming the government for not saving the hostages when they were still alive. Defence Minister Yoav Gallant has called for a reversal of the decision to keep forces along the border with Egypt to bring back the remaining hostages held by Hamas.
Businesses have shown support by announcing measures to help the families of hostages, with cinema chains and restaurants closing in solidarity. The conflict has led to a massive military campaign by Israel, resulting in thousands of casualties, mainly women and children, according to the UN human rights office.
