Foreign Policy Dominates German State Elections

With the Thuringia and Saxony state elections in Germany approaching, foreign policy issues are taking center stage. Campaigns have been influenced by the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, with calls for peace talks being prioritized by parties like the AfD and Sahra Wagenknecht’s BSW alliance.
AfD’s Steffen Janich emphasized the importance of ending the war for the sake of the Ukrainian people, urging for dialogue with Putin. However, there is hesitation among voters regarding Germany’s involvement in the conflict, with some preferring peace and neutrality over military action.
Despite differing opinions, BSW’s campaign centered around peace between Russia and Ukraine has resonated with voters in eastern Germany. However, some have accused Wagenknecht of aligning too closely with Putin’s interests, a claim she refuted during a rally in Dresden.
