Human rights lawyer Femi Falana has raised concerns about the impact of rising living costs and arbitrary fuel price hikes on Nigerian roads. In an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Falana criticized the ‘monumental fraud’ in fuel importation and urged transparency from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL).
NNPCL recently admitted financial strain affecting fuel supply stability. Falana questioned the discrepancy between fuel subsidies during economic prosperity and current scarcity, noting a decrease in vehicles on the road despite continued subsidies.
Falana highlighted reports suggesting NNPCL’s lack of transparency regarding fuel smuggling, pointing out logistical challenges in smuggling the claimed volumes. He urged for the exposure of fuel importation fraud.
As Nigerians face fuel scarcity and economic challenges, Falana’s call for accountability and transparency from NNPCL and the government is essential. It is time to address the discrepancies in fuel importation and ensure fair pricing for Nigerian consumers.
