There is a growing debate within the EU about whether to send military instructors to Ukraine, with some countries in favor of deployment and others warning of potential escalation of the conflict.
Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur highlighted the lack of consensus within the EU on this issue, emphasizing the need to find common ground among member states. The EU aims to expand its training mission of Ukrainian soldiers but is divided on whether to directly send instructors to Ukraine.
Pevkur suggested the possibility of extending the EU Military Assistance Mission in support of Ukraine and training smaller groups on Ukrainian soil. EU’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell, also mentioned plans to increase the training mission for Ukrainian soldiers.
However, countries like Austria, Germany, and Hungary have expressed opposition to deploying EU instructors in Ukraine, citing concerns about potential conflict escalation. Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov have warned against additional military aid to Kiev, with Lavrov specifically mentioning the French contingent as a potential target for Russian forces.
The debate continues as different perspectives clash within the EU, highlighting the complexity of the situation and the need for careful consideration moving forward.
