The long-awaited Main Line-1 (ML-1) railway project in Pakistan is set to be revived under the PML-N coalition government, with plans to collaborate with China for its execution this year. The approval for the project was given during a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, marking a significant step towards enhancing railway infrastructure in the country.
The ML-1 project will involve constructing an additional rail track from Karachi to Peshawar, incorporating modern facilities to improve connectivity and speed potential. The project, spanning 1,726km, has been renegotiated at a cost of $6.68 billion, down from the original estimate of $9.85 billion.
The government also announced plans for a five-year Home Grown Economic Revival Plan aimed at boosting various sectors like exports, agriculture, industry, and youth development.
With negotiations finalized with China for the project’s funding, the first phase of ML-1 will commence soon, focusing on laying additional tracks from Karachi to Multan. The second phase will extend the track from Lahore to Peshawar, further improving railway connectivity in the region.
