UN Special Rapporteur Denounces Israel’s Self-Defense Justification for West Bank Offensive
The UN Special Rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian Territories, Francesca Albanese slammed Israel for using self-defense as a justification for its military offensive in the West Bank. She emphasized that Israel’s occupation of the oPT cannot be justified by any claim of self-defense.
In response to Israel’s military offensive in the northern West Bank, with at least 19 Palestinians killed, Albanese highlighted the illegality of Israel’s actions. She called on Israel to cease its colonization efforts and withdraw from the territory, in line with international legal rulings.
The UN has called for an immediate halt to Israel’s military operations, citing excessive use of force and deadly tactics that have resulted in the loss of lives and damage to civilian infrastructure. The International Court of Justice has deemed Israel’s occupation of Palestinian land illegal, demanding the dismantling of settlements.
Albanese also raised concerns about a Portuguese-flagged ship carrying explosives destined for Israel, urging other countries to uphold international law by blocking such transfers. The hope is that compliance with legal obligations will prevent Israel’s potential war crimes and violations of human rights.
