Ukraine to Receive 4,000 Javelins in .3 Billion US Army Deal

The US Army has awarded a $1.3 billion follow-on production contract to the Lockheed Martin and Raytheon Javelin Joint Venture (JJV) to produce FGM-148 Javelin Advanced Anti-Tank Weapon System-Medium (AAWS-M) missiles for Ukraine. This agreement is part of a larger contract aiming to provide more than $7 billion worth of missiles between 2023 and 2026. With the global demand for Javelin increasing due to its effectiveness against Russian armored vehicles, the missile’s tandem charge warhead and top-attack method make it lethal against modern battlefield armor.

The Javelin has proven highly effective in combat, with a maximum range of 4.75 kilometers and reports indicating the destruction of hundreds of Russian tanks. Ukrainian forces have praised the Javelin, even creating a logo dubbed “Saint Javelin” to raise charitable funds. This success has significantly aided Ukraine’s defense against Russian invaders since February 2022.

The combination of advanced technology and strategic use of the Javelin missile has significantly impacted the conflict in Ukraine, showcasing the power of modern anti-tank weaponry in modern warfare.
