Despite delays in appointing ambassadors to oversee Nigeria’s foreign missions, the Federal Government allocated approximately N14bn to 16 foreign missions in July 2024. This comes as Nigeria has 109 missions worldwide.
President Bola Tinubu had recalled all career and non-career ambassadors in September 2023, prompting concerns over diplomatic representation. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, cited financial challenges for the delays in appointing new envoys.
The funds, disbursed through the FGN Treasury, were allocated to missions in various countries including the USA, UK, China, and Canada. While the lack of appointed ambassadors remains a concern, former ambassador Ogbole Ode highlighted the deployment of consulate heads despite funding constraints.
The government’s focus on subsidizing production over consumption has faced challenges, with financial resources impacting the effective operation of foreign missions. The disbursement of funds aims to support Nigeria’s diplomatic presence globally, addressing concerns over delayed ambassador appointments.
