Introduction
Many people believe that a successful marriage is a matter of luck, but the reality is that it takes hard work and dedication. Just like any worthwhile endeavor in life, a good marriage requires effort and commitment. A marriage counsellor once described marriage as an empty box that gives back what you put into it. In other words, the success of a marriage depends on the effort and intentionality of the individuals involved.
In order to make your marriage work, it’s crucial to understand the purpose of marriage. Marriage serves as a companionship and a means of assistance, not just for fun or freedom. It’s important to prioritize your spouse above all other relationships and responsibilities. In marriage, cooperation and complementarity are key, rather than competition. The roles of husband and wife are unique and designed to work together harmoniously.
How To Make Your Marriage Work
• Understand The Purpose Of Marriage
Marriage is meant to provide companionship and assistance, not just for personal gratification. Couples should work together to fulfill the purpose of their union, recognizing the importance of mutual respect and cooperation.
• Companionship (Gen 2:18)
God created marriage to meet the need for companionship and support. Couples should focus on building a strong relationship with each other, rather than seeking fulfillment elsewhere. By prioritizing each other’s needs and feelings, couples can strengthen their bond and create a lasting partnership.
• Assistance (Gen 2:18b)
In marriage, the roles of husband and wife are complementary, not competitive. The husband is called to lead with love and the wife is called to support with respect. By following these biblical principles, couples can cultivate a relationship based on mutual love and understanding.
Ultimately, a successful marriage requires both partners to work together, communicate openly, and prioritize each other’s needs. By understanding the purpose of marriage and committing to fulfilling that purpose, couples can build a strong and lasting relationship.
