Germany has resumed deporting Afghan nationals convicted of crimes back to Afghanistan, just days before regional elections where migration is a key issue. The decision to restart deportations comes after a fatal stabbing incident linked to Islamic State and increasing pressure on the government to address security concerns. Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced the resumption of deportations carefully, while Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck emphasized the importance of preserving asylum rights in Germany.
Qatar played a key role in facilitating negotiations between Germany and the Taliban, allowing for the return of Afghans based on their legal status. However, this move has raised concerns, with ProAsyl calling it a “declaration of bankruptcy for the constitutional state.” Despite the resumption of deportations to Afghanistan and plans for similar action in Syria, the German government maintains it will not normalize relations with the Taliban.
In light of decreasing asylum applications and past controversies with deportations, the issue of migration remains a hot topic in German politics ahead of upcoming regional elections.
