X Social Media Platform Faces Suspension in Brazil
The popular social media platform X is on the verge of being suspended in Brazil after failing to meet a 24-hour court deadline. A Brazilian Supreme Court judge issued a warning to X, stating that the platform could face suspension if CEO Elon Musk did not appoint a new legal representative for its operations in Brazil within the given time frame.
X announced on Friday that it expects to be shut down in Brazil after missing the deadline. The platform’s Global Government Affairs team expressed their resistance to what they claimed were illegal orders to censor political opponents, emphasizing their commitment to upholding Brazil’s laws.
X also plans to publish all alleged illegal demands from the Brazilian judge in the interest of transparency. Musk, who halted X’s business activities in Brazil earlier this month, criticized Judge Alexandre de Moraes for what he perceives as part of a broader attack on free speech.
Judge Moraes, known for his efforts against disinformation, previously ordered the suspension of accounts spreading false information, including those associated with former President Jair Bolsonaro. Failure to comply with the court’s orders could lead to the suspension of X’s operations in Brazil.
