• Southwest Stakeholders Task Governors On Rice Production Strategies
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the World Food Programme (WFP) have provided $1.6 million in funding to address malnutrition and poverty in Kastina and Sokoto states amidst banditry and displacements in the North West region. WFP is set to receive 5000 metric tonnes of wheat donations from Ukraine to distribute in the North West region to combat hunger.
Additionally, Ministries of Agriculture in the Southwest states are urging governors to focus on enhancing food productivity, specifically through rice paddy cultivation. The WFP will provide support to beneficiaries in Kastina and Sokoto states through cash transfers and nutritious food to prevent malnutrition.
The stakeholders have highlighted the need for increased rice production in the Southwest to meet growing demand and improve food security. The Southwest Agro-Commodity Company and other organizations are collaborating to strengthen the region’s agricultural sector.
