Choctaw Nation presents ‘eternal’ sculpture to Ireland

Tribal members, leaders, and dignitaries from the Choctaw Nation in Oklahoma and Ireland recently gathered at the Choctaw Capitol Grounds in Tuskahoma to unveil a new sculpture celebrating the historic Choctaw-Irish connection. The Eternal Hearts sculpture, funded by the Government and the Chahta Foundation, pays tribute to The Gift – a donation made by the Choctaw Indians for famine relief in Ireland in 1847.

Standing at an impressive 2.45 metres tall, the sculpture, created by Choctaw Nation tribal member Samuel Stitt, symbolizes the everlasting bond between the two nations. Facing towards Ireland, the sculpture’s Celtic trinity shape intertwined with a heart signifies unity and compassion.

The event, attended by Minister of State Thomas Byrne, highlighted the enduring friendship initiated by the Choctaw’s act of generosity during the Great Irish Famine. Chief Gary Batton expressed gratitude for the shared values of caring and giving, emphasizing the importance of remembering and passing down these principles to future generations.

The sculpture serves as a poignant reminder of solidarity and compassion between the Choctaw and Irish peoples, honoring a remarkable connection that spans across generations.
