A 32-year-old woman stabbed and wounded six people on a bus in Siegen, Germany, during an incident on Friday evening. The suspect, a German national, was arrested after the attack in which three victims are in a life-threatening condition. At least 40 people were on the bus traveling to a city festival at the time.
Authorities are investigating the motive behind the crime and have ruled out terrorism. Germany’s Bild tabloid reported that the attacker may have been suffering from mental health issues.
Knife crime a growing security challenge
The incident follows a deadly knife attack in Solingen that resulted in three deaths and eight injuries. The suspected perpetrator, a 26-year-old Syrian man, was due for deportation to Bulgaria.
In response, Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s government implemented new restrictions on carrying knives in public places and announced cuts to benefits for some illegal migrants. Additionally, police shot dead a man suspected of knife attacks in Moers near Solingen.
