The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has stepped in to support Burundi in the fight against Mpox by donating vaccine storage equipment. The donation, valued at $314,617, includes 28 electric and solar refrigerators, 20 ice rooms, and 162 vaccine-carrying boxes. Dr. Merawi Aragaw, head of Africa CDC’s Emergency Preparedness and Response Division, handed over the equipment to Burundi’s assistant minister of public health, Dr. Isidore Ntiharirizwa.
Dr. Merawi emphasized the importance of adequate vaccine storage equipment in combating diseases like Mpox and ensuring immunization coverage. This donation is part of Africa CDC’s partnership with the Master Card Foundation, with Burundi being the fourth country to receive such support.
Burundi has reported 231 Mpox cases, with no deaths recorded as of yet. The World Health Organization is also working on providing vaccines for Mpox, highlighting the importance of vaccination programs in preventing such diseases. Overall, this donation is a significant boost to Burundi’s healthcare system and will contribute to the country’s efforts to combat Mpox effectively.
