Union Women and Child Development Minister Annpurna Devi responded to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s plea for stricter punishment for crimes like rape and rape-murder, citing existing provisions in the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Devi stated that the BNS mandates a minimum 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for rape, extending to life imprisonment or even the death penalty based on the severity of the offense.
‘If the state government follows Central legislation…’
She emphasized that the Central Government’s laws are robust and comprehensive to combat crimes against women and urged state governments to align with these regulations to enhance the criminal justice system.
Devi concluded by reaffirming the Central Government’s commitment to eradicating gender-based violence and discrimination, creating a safe environment for women and girls to thrive.
Banerjee, in response, expressed disappointment with the Minister’s lackluster reply to her concerns regarding the recent rape and murder case at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College.
