Power Outage Hits Venezuela Amid Political Tensions

A widespread power outage struck Venezuela’s capital, Caracas, and other parts of the country, with the government blaming sabotage by the opposition. Communication Minister Freddy Nanez claimed an “electrical sabotage” occurred early Friday, affecting almost the entire nation. All 24 states reported power failures, adding to the turmoil following the disputed presidential election on July 28. The blackout is reminiscent of the major outage in 2019, also following contested elections.

While the government points fingers at sabotage, observers suggest underfunding and poor maintenance may be causing the outages. The opposition disputes the election results, with candidate Edmundo Gonzalez facing legal action for publishing alternative tallies. President Maduro threatens to imprison opposition leaders Maria Corina Machado and Gonzalez, blaming them for post-election protests.
