Israel’s decision to accelerate the forced displacement of Palestinians in Gaza has worsened the humanitarian crisis in the besieged enclave, as revealed in a leaked US cable circulating online. The cable, reported by Klip News, highlights the mass displacement of Palestinians into a restricted “safe zone”, likened to just 70% of Washington’s Dulles International Airport.
The US Agency for International Development (USAID) noted the rapid pace of Israel’s displacement orders and the dangers faced by the affected population. The cable warns that ongoing evacuations could hinder humanitarian operations, leaving 2.1 million people in dire need without assistance.
Despite efforts to lobby Israel for mitigating measures, the US government acknowledges the challenge of reversing the displacement policy. Recent orders to evacuate parts of Deir al-Balah have severely impacted humanitarian work, affecting UN operations and vital facilities.
In response, the State Department stressed the importance of restoring access for humanitarian workers amidst the ongoing operations, emphasizing the need for safe conditions. USAID, responsible for developmental and humanitarian efforts, faces the daunting task of addressing the escalating crisis in Gaza.
