Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co, the world’s largest contract chipmaker, is planning to establish a third chip plant in Japan by 2030, according to Taiwan’s economic affairs minister. The new facility will focus on advanced chip production and could help address the shortage of skilled engineers in the region.
The decision to move forward with the construction of the plant lies with TSMC, but the company’s CEO has expressed interest in expanding their operations in Japan. This potential development comes as Japan seeks to strengthen its semiconductor supply chains amidst global tensions.
Japanese chip venture Rapidus Corp. is also making strides in chip production in Hokkaido, highlighting the country’s commitment to technology innovation.
Kumamoto Gov. Takashi Kimura has actively lobbied for TSMC to consider setting up their third plant in the prefecture, showcasing Japan’s eagerness to collaborate with leading chip manufacturers.
With the support of government subsidies totaling billions of yen, TSMC aims to begin mass production at their first plant by the end of the year and commence operations at the second plant by 2027.
Overall, this anticipated expansion in Japan symbolizes a significant step towards enhancing the region’s technological capabilities and securing its position in the semiconductor industry.
