The Congress MP added that Sheikh Hasina staying in India indefinitely will complicate matters as Bangladesh will see this as harbouring somebody who is hostile to it
India absolutely had the obligation to show that if a friend is in need, it will help, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said on Friday, referring to Bangladesh’s ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina. Tharoor mentioned the need for India to assist when a friend is in need, especially in the case of Sheikh Hasina seeking refuge in India after resigning from her position as Bangladesh’s prime minister amid protests.
Tharoor highlighted the situation in Bangladesh, emphasizing on the attacks on Hindus and the anti-Hindu sentiments that emerged post-Hasina’s departure, while also acknowledging acts of support towards Hindu families. The political turmoil led to significant violence in Bangladesh, resulting in over 600 deaths since the start of protests.
Following Hasina’s exit, an interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has taken charge, aiming to stabilize the country. Tharoor also praised Hasina’s actions against militants and stressed the importance of gratitude towards her efforts against threats to India.
While recognizing the potential complications of Hasina staying in India indefinitely, Tharoor emphasized the need for India to demonstrate support towards friends in times of need. The outcome of this situation depends heavily on Hasina’s future actions and conduct.
