The authorities in Russia’s Kursk Oblast are taking measures to maintain “law and order” by creating armed volunteer detachments, as announced by acting governor Alexey Smirnov. Ukraine’s ongoing incursion into Kursk Oblast has reportedly resulted in the control of 1,294 square kilometers and 100 settlements by the Ukrainian military. The volunteer detachment called “Bars-Kursk” will be trained and armed to ensure security in evacuated areas of the region. They will closely coordinate with the army and the counter-terrorist operation headquarters. Despite Russia’s attempts to downplay Ukraine’s actions as a “counter-terrorism operation,” Oleksandr Syrskyi, commander-in-chief of Ukraine’s Armed Forces, revealed the redeployment of 30,000 troops to Kursk Oblast in response.
The Russian Defense Ministry plans to establish troop groups in Belgorod, Kursk, and Bryansk oblasts to defend settlements along the Ukrainian border. Ukraine’s incursion into Kursk Oblast has yielded military and political results, raising hopes for the sooner end to Russia’s full-scale invasion. This bold move by Ukraine has surprised Moscow and the world, showcasing the determination to confront Russian aggression.
