Rhodes University management, students, and Makhanda community members gathered for a march to the municipality’s offices in protest of the ongoing water infrastructure issues. Residents have been facing water shortages for a week, causing disruptions in everyday life.
The university had to suspend undergraduate classes due to the severity of the water disruption, relying on tankers for essential water supply. The community has been grappling with unreliable water sources for over a decade, prompting the parliamentary committee to intervene last year.
SRC representative, Siya Hlebani, criticized the municipality for their neglect, stating that the water supply has been inconsistent for more than 15 days, causing major inconveniences. Despite promises of upgrades to water treatment works and raw water sources, the situation has not improved.
The protest aimed to hold the municipality accountable for the lack of action and to demand a long-term solution to the water crisis that has been plaguing the community. The unity among Rhodes University and Makhanda residents shows a strong determination to fight for their rights to clean and reliable water access.
