A thief made a “very silly” mistake by stealing a 20kg gorilla statue named Garry from a retirement village in Melbourne. Matthew Newbould admitted to taking Garry while at the village to buy furniture, loading it onto a rented ute before driving off.
Newbould was caught after a member of the public saw the gorilla in the back of his vehicle and contacted the police. Text messages on his phone revealed his boastful attitude towards the theft.
Newbould’s lawyer described his actions as impulsive, with no intention to sell the statue. The court ordered him to undertake a community corrections order assessment before sentencing in September.
Despite the mistake, Newbould’s bail was extended as he awaits his next court date.
