Mollywood, the Malayalam-language film industry based in Kerala, is facing a deepening sexual abuse scandal involving top movie stars and industry leaders. A recent report highlighted rampant sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and various issues faced by women in the industry.
Since the report’s release, numerous women have come forward with assault allegations, leading to the Kerala police registering 17 cases involving prominent figures in the industry. The Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) dissolved its executive committee, and a new governing body will be elected soon.
The Hema Committee, formed in response to a high-profile rape incident, exposed a culture of harassment and abuse in Mollywood. Actor Swara Bhaskar highlighted the normalization of harassment as industry practices. Despite denials, allegations against industry members continue to surface.
Making Mollywood Safer for Women
Actor Prithviraj Sukumaran called for a thorough investigation into the issues raised, emphasizing the need for industry-wide safety. The report aims to empower women and create safer spaces in Mollywood, urging significant changes and improved accountability in the industry.
