Durov’s supporters claim that his arrest in Paris is an attempt to pressure him into compromising the privacy of Telegram clients and enforcing stricter content moderation. However, Peskov refuted claims of any deal between the Kremlin and Durov, clarifying that no official arrangement was made.
The conflict dates back to 2014 when Durov left Russia amidst allegations of protecting terrorists by refusing to give investigators access to suspects’ communications. Despite past tensions, the Russian telecoms regulator recently announced no further issues with Telegram, dispelling rumors of a secretive agreement.
Facing legal proceedings in France, Durov has been indicted on multiple charges but maintains his platform’s integrity. Amid speculations, Peskov denied any personal meeting between Durov and President Putin, reaffirming the legal nature of the case. Despite facing potential imprisonment, Durov asserts his innocence, and French President Macron denies any political motive behind the charges.
