An incredible and tragic story has come to an end as John Manard, the inmate who famously escaped from a Kansas prison hidden in a dog crate, passed away at the La Palma Correctional Facility in Arizona. The cause of death is pending an autopsy.
Manard was serving a life sentence for a homicide in Kansas when he met Toby Young, a prison worker. Together, they orchestrated his daring escape on February 12, 2006. Sadly, they were captured 12 days later in Tennessee.
Young, who divorced her husband and later remarried, was sentenced for her role in the escape. Despite the tumultuous events, she wrote a book about her experience called “Living With Conviction.”
The story has captured the attention of the media, with a Lifetime movie titled “Jailbreak Lovers” being inspired by the events. In a heart-wrenching letter, Manard expressed regrets and described his relationship with Young as a “fairytale love the size of infinity.”
