Japan is ramping up its defense budget to a record-breaking amount in response to increasing military activities by China near Taiwan and ongoing nuclear threats from North Korea. The Defense Ministry revealed plans to surpass ¥8.5 trillion ($58 billion) for fiscal 2025, with a focus on acquiring attack drones, long-range missiles, and small satellites to enhance its counterstrike capabilities.
This budget request marks a significant increase of about 10% from last year’s record budget of ¥7.7 trillion, as part of a five-year spending plan totaling around ¥43 trillion. Japan’s goal is to allocate 2% of its GDP to defense by 2027, signaling its commitment to bolstering its military readiness in the face of regional security challenges.
With tensions rising in the Asia-Pacific region, Japan’s move to boost its defense capabilities sends a strong message to both its allies and adversaries about its commitment to ensuring national security and maintaining peace in the region.
