Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid recently testified before an independent commission, highlighting the perception of weakness on the Israeli side by enemies such as Iran, Hezbollah, and terrorist groups in Gaza and the West Bank. Lapid explained that internal tensions, a decline in military capabilities, and strained relations with the U.S. have intensified these threats, as warned during a security briefing on August 21st, 2023.
Lapid emphasized the warning issued by Chief of the General Staff of the IDF, Herzi Halevi, regarding the dangers posed by internal divisions in Israel due to judicial reform. Despite attempts by Halevi to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, he was denied and had to resort to expressing concerns in writing.
Lapid expressed concern over Israel’s weakened deterrence capability, as confirmed by intelligence in September. He shared this information in a press conference on September 20th, cautioning about a potential multi-front confrontation and criticizing Netanyahu for being aware of the threats but choosing to ignore them.
