Germany has taken a significant step by deporting Afghan criminals back to their home country for the first time since the Taliban took power in 2021. The move comes as part of the government’s efforts to tighten security and address public concerns about illegal migration.
A total of 28 Afghan nationals, who were convicted offenders with deportation orders, were flown back to Kabul on a chartered Qatar Airways flight. The operation was the result of secret negotiations involving Qatar as an intermediary between Berlin and the Taliban authorities.
In a statement, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser emphasized the need to take action against dangerous and convicted asylum seekers, following recent high-profile crimes. This includes the deportation of serious criminals back to their home countries, even if they are deemed unsafe like Afghanistan or Syria.
Despite criticism from rights groups like Amnesty International, the German government remains firm on its decision, with Chancellor Olaf Scholz reaffirming the government’s commitment to respecting the constitution while prioritizing public safety.
