Germany conducted its first deportation of Afghan nationals back to their home country since the Taliban took power in August 2021. The 28 Afghans on board a chartered flight to Kabul were all convicted offenders with deportation orders. The operation followed two months of negotiations with Qatar acting as a mediator.
The move comes as Germany faces pressure to crack down on illegal migration and deport dangerous asylum seekers. Recent high-profile crimes, including a deadly knife attack allegedly by a Syrian man with ISIS ties, have sparked renewed debate on deporting criminals from unsafe countries like Afghanistan and Syria.
Interior Minister Nancy Faeser announced plans to resume expulsions to Syria and Afghanistan soon as part of stricter security and asylum policies. Immigration concerns are a major issue in upcoming regional elections in eastern Germany, with the far-right AfD party poised to make significant gains.
Despite criticism and concerns, Germany is taking steps to tighten its policies and address public safety in the face of growing migration challenges.
