Germany deported 28 Afghan nationals, described as convicted criminals, to their homeland on Friday – the first deportation since the Taliban regained power in August 2021. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser cited security concerns, as Germany lacks diplomatic relations with the Taliban. The move is unlikely to improve relations, especially after the Taliban’s recent enforcement of restrictive morality laws.
The deportations come amidst a debate over immigration ahead of regional elections in Saxony and Thuringia. In response to recent attacks in Germany, including a deadly knife attack by a Syrian asylum seeker, the government has vowed to tighten laws and make deportations easier.
Amnesty International criticized the deportations, claiming Afghanistan is not safe and alleging violations of international law. The action has raised concerns about political influence during an election campaign.
