Buenos Aires Arrests Red Brigades Fugitive After 44 Years on the Run
After eluding Italian authorities for almost 44 years, Leonardo Bertulazzi, a former member of the leftist militant group Red Brigades, has been arrested in Buenos Aires. Bertulazzi, now 72, was sentenced in absentia in Italy for the kidnapping of a wealthy naval engineer in the 1970s. Despite being initially arrested in 2002, Bertulazzi was released and managed to evade capture until now.
The Red Brigades gained notoriety in the 1970s and ’80s for their politically motivated kidnappings and killings, including the high-profile abduction and murder of former Prime Minister Aldo Moro. Bertulazzi’s arrest was made possible through collaboration between Argentine and Italian authorities, as well as Interpol.
As Bertulazzi faces extradition to Italy to serve his 27-year prison sentence, his lawyers are appealing to prevent his removal from Argentina. This development marks a significant breakthrough in the ongoing efforts to bring former Red Brigades members to justice for their past crimes. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni commended the authorities in Buenos Aires for their successful operation.
