Brazilian Supreme Court Threatens Huge Fines for VPN Users Accessing Banned App
The Supreme Court of Brazil has ordered the immediate suspension of X (formerly Twitter) and imposed a hefty fine of approximately $8,874 a day for individuals using a VPN to bypass the ban. Justice Alexandre de Moraes demanded that X censor accounts spreading disinformation, but owner Elon Musk refused, leading to the ban in Brazil and a deadline for Google and Apple to remove the app from their stores.
In response, Musk criticized de Moraes, calling him an “evil dictator cosplaying as a judge” and accusing President Luis Ignacio Lula da Silva of being his “lapdog.” De Moraes also froze the accounts of Starlink, a subsidiary of Musk’s SpaceX, prompting objections from Musk over the lack of due process and legal representation.
X’s Global Government Affairs team highlighted the threats and legal actions taken against them, vowing to remain transparent in their defiance of what they deem as illegal orders. The ongoing dispute underscores the importance of freedom of expression and democracy, with the US embassy in Brazil monitoring the situation.
This censorship battle reflects broader tensions surrounding digital liberties and government control, with social media platforms like X taking a stand against undue influence and censorship.
