Bear Brigade troops from Russia to depart for Ukraine war

Russia is withdrawing 100 paramilitary officers from Burkina Faso to support its defense against Ukraine’s recent offensive. The Bear Brigade, a Russian private military company, had been in Burkina Faso since May to aid the military junta. This abrupt departure has raised concerns about the potential for Islamist insurgents to take advantage of the situation, especially after a recent horrific attack in which up to 300 people were killed.

Burkina Faso has been plagued by jihadist attacks since 2015, with millions displaced and ongoing violence. The junta, under interim President Capt Ibrahim Traoré, has struggled to address the security crisis, despite seeking support from Russia. The Bear Brigade’s role in guarding Burkinabè officials, including Traoré, has been a point of contention, with the group’s departure leaving a gap in the country’s military support.

As Burkina Faso grapples with escalating violence and security challenges, the withdrawal of the Bear Brigade highlights the complex dynamics at play in the region. How the junta plans to address this loss remains uncertain, as armed groups continue to pose a threat to stability.
