Activist battles extradition from Serbia – DW – 08/28/2024

The Fate of Belarus Activist Andrey Gnyot Hangs in the Balance

A court in Belgrade, Serbia, will soon decide the fate of Andrey Gnyot, a Belarus activist facing extradition to Minsk. Accused of tax evasion by Belarus authorities, Gnyot’s lawyers claim the charges are politically motivated due to his opposition to dictator Alexander Lukashenko. Gnyot, known for his activism and journalism, was arrested in Serbia on an INTERPOL warrant.

After being detained for several months, Gnyot was placed under house arrest with an electronic ankle bracelet. Despite facing extradition, he and his legal team continue to appeal the decision, hoping to avoid being sent back to Belarus where he fears violence and torture. International support for Gnyot has been strong, with organizations like Amnesty International and individuals in over 20 countries calling for an end to the extradition process.

As the Serbian courts deliberate, Gnyot remains hopeful for a favorable outcome that will allow him to return home safely and avoid further persecution in Belarus.
