US National Security Advisor Holds Talks in Beijing on Strategic Rivalry

US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan visited Beijing for crucial talks with Chinese officials this week, focusing on maintaining communication channels amid the escalating strategic rivalry between the two nations.

Sullivan’s discussions with high-ranking Chinese military officials, including General Zhang Youxiam, Vice Chairman of China’s Central Military Commission, aimed at enhancing military communication and preventing miscalculations in the face of tense issues like Beijing’s activities in the South China Sea and pressure on Taiwan.

The first trip by a US national security advisor to China since 2016 highlighted efforts to responsibly manage the complex US-China relationship through ongoing dialogue. Concerns are growing in Washington over China’s rapid expansion of nuclear capabilities, emphasizing the need for updated nuclear weapons employment guidance.
