Swedish MP Markus Wiechel has criticized Azerbaijan for blacklisting 76 PACE delegates, calling out the ‘dictatorship’ for failing to uphold Council of Europe values. Following PACE’s decision not to ratify Azerbaijani credentials due to unmet commitments, Baku declared voting members as personae non gratae.

Wiechel stated, “Azerbaijan’s move demonstrates why the delegation lost their voting rights.” He highlighted the importance of fundamental principles like democracy and freedom of speech within the Council of Europe.

Regarding the consequences of Azerbaijan’s actions, Wiechel believes it will make support from other delegations harder in the future. He emphasized his consistent support for Armenia while criticizing Azerbaijan’s treatment towards dissenting voices.

PACE President Rousopoulos echoed concerns, stating that the Azeri blacklist will likely backfire. Wiechel expressed no surprise at the ban imposed on Swedish MPs by Azerbaijan, emphasizing the principled stand taken by his delegation.
