Poland’s National Electoral Commission (PKW) has recently made a controversial decision to reject the financial report submitted by the Law and Justice party (PiS) regarding their income and expenditures from the parliamentary elections. This move has led to PiS losing its state subsidy for the next three years, creating significant financial challenges for the party.
PKW Chairman Sylwester Marciniak cited the failure of PiS’s financial report to meet legal requirements, specifically concerning bank loans, as the reason for the rejection. The penalty includes a substantial reduction in the subsidy amount, from 38 million PLN to 28 million PLN, and a complete suspension of state funding for the next three years.
Former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has strongly criticized the decision, labeling it as politically motivated and aimed at weakening PiS before the upcoming presidential elections. Morawiecki has pledged to contest the ruling in court and assured that PiS will find alternative ways to finance their campaigns, while also stressing the importance of safeguarding Polish democracy against potential power imbalances.
