Nigeria, once the largest crude oil producer in Africa, has seen a decline in its oil production due to rampant oil theft. The theft of approximately 620 million barrels of oil between 2009 and 2020 has cost the country about $46 billion, severely impacting its economy and environment.
To combat petroleum theft, Nigeria must adopt advanced technologies like fiber optic sensors for leak detection, acoustic leak detection, surveillance through drones and satellite imagery, and real-time data analytics using Big Data and AI. Additionally, implementing blockchain technology for transparent supply chain management and enhancing cybersecurity measures are crucial steps.
Collaboration with international partners, legal reforms, community engagement, and the use of virtual reality training can further strengthen Nigeria’s stance against oil theft. By leveraging cutting-edge innovations, Nigeria can protect its oil assets, preserve the environment, and revitalize its economy.
