Namibia Blocks Access to Vessel Suspected of Carrying Military Cargo for Israel

Namibia has taken a bold stand against Israel’s military offensive in Gaza by blocking access to a Portuguese-flagged cargo vessel suspected of carrying military cargo for Israel. The MV Kathrin, which departed from Vietnam, was denied permission to dock at the Walvis Bay port by Namibian authorities.

Justice Minister Yvonne Dausab confirmed the decision, citing international obligations under the Genocide Convention and an advisory opinion by the International Court of Justice. A police investigation concluded that the ship was carrying explosive material destined for Israel, leading to its prohibition from entering Namibian waters.

Rights groups, including the Economic and Social Justice Trust, praised Namibia for upholding its stance against Israel’s military actions. Namport, the Namibian Ports Authority, pledged to ensure the safety and security of territorial waters while supporting Namibia’s position on international relations.

Namibia’s strong condemnation of Israel’s actions in Gaza has also extended to criticism of Germany for its support of Israel amid an ICJ case. Namibian President Hage Geingob urged Germany to reconsider its stance, highlighting Germany’s own history of genocide in Namibia and calling for consistency in international principles.
