Mexico freezes relations with U.S. embassy

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador announced a freeze in ties with the U.S. Embassy in response to criticism over a proposed judicial reform. The President emphasized the need for respect towards Mexico’s sovereignty during a press conference at the National Palace in Mexico City.

Lopez Obrador’s reform seeks to elect judges, including Supreme Court justices, by popular vote, aiming to enhance democracy and address flaws in the current system. However, critics argue that the reform could undermine the independence of the judiciary.

The U.S. Ambassador to Mexico expressed concerns about the proposed reform, sparking tensions between the two countries. In response, Mexico sent a diplomatic note to the U.S., and the Foreign Minister reiterated Mexico’s sovereign decision-making process.

While diplomatic relations are strained, both countries affirm the importance of maintaining a stable relationship. The incident highlights the complexities of balancing national sovereignty and international partnerships.
